Have y’all seen Den of Thieves yet? If you haven’t then you’re missing out. Yes, yes, I know everyone is flocking to watch Black Panther. That was great too. However, people are sleeping on Den of Thieves.
The popular saying, “Loose lips sink ships” isn’t something that’s new but it was pivotal to the movie’s plot. I’ve been hearing it since I was a young ‘un. However, people still don’t seem to get the message. What is a secret these days? If 50 people know about it then is it really a secret? Those “loose lips” are definitely one of the reasons that I have trust issues. I grew up in a small village on the West Coast of Demerara in Guyana and it is the epitome of the term “small world”. Everyone knows each other, what you’re doing, where you’re going, where you’ve been and who you’ve been there with. Privacy doesn’t exist unless you’re literally locked in your room. Speak too loudly and your neighbour will hear everything that you’re saying. Hell, the person passing on the street will hear everything you’re saying. Obviously, living in such a close knit community has it perks. Everyone is basically like family. You’ve got free baby sitters, someone to ask for sugar if you’re out and multiple shoulders to cry on if you’re down.
However, when you’re young that small tight knit community is something you long to get away from. If you’re a mischievous child, best be sure that you won’t be doing anything without your mama hearing about it. If you’re a teenage girl, don’t you dare try to stand on the street talking to a boy and climbers beware, there is someone watching you trying to steal the mango from the tree. In a small village, word spreads quickly, people tend to take gossip as fact and whatever is said about you can permanently bolster or taint your reputation. Yes, those mighty loose gobbling lips working to sink floating ships can be dangerous weapons. When you speak without thinking, there’s no care for consequences, effects or feelings. We all know that words have power and yet some of y’all are worse than Donald Trump and that says a lot. No stories or examples today because I’d just be spinning the rumour mill like everyone else. You get the point though.
So please, think twice before you speak and something is no longer a secret if 50 people know about it, so don’t go telling just anyone your business.
